Mondo Duplantis Breaks Pole Vault World Record for 12th Time, Thrills Home Crowd in Stockholm.
Swedish pole vault sensation Mondo Duplantis broke the world record for an astonishing 12th time, clearing 6.28 metres at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Stockholm on Sunday, June 15. Competing at the historic 1912 Olympic Stadium, the 25-year-old surpassed his previous best of 6.27m, set earlier this year in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Cheered on by an electrified home crowd, Duplantis delivered on his promise to attempt a new world record on home soil — and delivered in style.
Australia’s Kurtis Marschall posed an early challenge but topped out at 5.90 metres, failing to clear the six-metre mark after three attempts. With the competition effectively settled, all eyes turned to Duplantis as he pushed the bar higher, ultimately soaring over 6.28m in a breathtaking display of athleticism.
“Full to the brim” with joy
After the record-setting leap, Duplantis was visibly emotional, reminiscing about his first jump at the same venue as a child.
“I feel full to the brim right now. I’ve got a lot of family here. The first time I jumped in this stadium when I was 11 years old, it was rainy and cold, and I jumped right under four metres — quite high for my age. I’m just going to enjoy the moment,” he said.
Eyes on 6.30m
With his name now etched into history — quite literally, as world record holders are commemorated in the stadium — Duplantis is already eyeing his next milestone.
“It’s the most beautiful stadium, in my biased opinion. Having my name etched here will be one of the greatest memories of my career. There’s not much between me and 6.30m, technically. I’m just a perfect day away from it,” he added.
Following the jump, Duplantis ripped off his shirt in celebration and embraced his family and partner, soaking in the applause from the euphoric home crowd. The American-born athlete, who represents Sweden, has become one of track and field’s brightest stars and earlier this year became just the second athlete ever to win the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year award.
With this latest achievement, Duplantis not only extended his own record but also deepened his bond with the city and stadium where his journey began.
