Father and Son Behind Bondi Beach Attack, 16 Dead; Son in Critical Condition.
The deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach Hanukkah event was carried out by a father and son reportedly from Pakistan, according to US intelligence officials. The 50-year-old father was killed at the scene, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, remains critically injured in hospital under police guard.
The attack, targeting Sydney’s Jewish community during Chanukah by the Sea, has been classified as a terrorist act. Police confirmed no other attackers were involved. Sixteen people, including the elder assailant, were killed. NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said investigators discovered two live IEDs near the scene, which were safely neutralised. The father, a licensed firearms holder, owned six guns used in the attack.
Lanyon added that the motive is still under investigation. Two officers wounded while responding remain hospitalised, and police will maintain heightened security at places of worship.
