28 Indian Vessels With 778 Seafarers Stuck in Persian Gulf Amid Tensions.

As many as 28 Indian vessels carrying 778 seafarers are currently stranded in the Persian Gulf, a government official said on Wednesday, as tensions continue to escalate in West Asia.

According to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways, 24 vessels with 677 seafarers are located on the western side of the Strait of Hormuz, while four vessels carrying 101 crew members are on the eastern side.

“We are actively monitoring all vessels for their safety and security,” Sinha said during a media briefing. He added that authorities, ship managers and recruitment agencies are closely coordinating with Indian embassies and local authorities to ensure the safety of crew members and provide medical assistance if required.

The ministry said it is closely tracking the evolving maritime situation in the region and has strengthened monitoring and preparedness measures to safeguard Indian ships and seafarers. Officials are also maintaining regular communication with industry stakeholders to provide support to shipping companies and crew members affected by the situation.

The Directorate General of Shipping has issued advisories directing Indian-flagged vessels and Indian seafarers to adopt enhanced security measures and strictly comply with reporting protocols, including submitting real-time operational details.

Sinha also said port operations across India remain stable despite the tensions. Major ports have introduced additional operational measures, including continuous monitoring of vessel movements in coordination with shipping lines and vessel agents, real-time assessment of developments in the Gulf region, and regular reporting on cargo and ship status.

The ministry and the Directorate General of Shipping are operating dedicated 24-hour control rooms to respond to the situation. Authorities are also maintaining contact with shipowners, operators and seafarer groups to provide timely updates and necessary assistance.

Ports across the country have been directed to extend all possible support to minimise disruptions for exporters and ensure continuity in India’s EXIM (export-import) trade, officials said.
