Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates: 78 Dead, Over 320 Injured in Massive Israeli Airstrikes.

The conflict between Israel and Iran escalated sharply on Friday as Israel launched its largest-ever air offensive on Iranian soil, targeting nuclear facilities, military bases, and strategic infrastructure. According to Iran’s envoy to the United Nations, the Israeli strikes left 78 people dead—mostly civilians—and over 320 injured.

In response, Iran initiated a counterattack dubbed “Operation True Promise”, launching a barrage of missiles and drones toward Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. At least one person was killed and 34 others injured in Israel. Sirens wailed across Israeli cities through the early hours of Saturday, as both nations exchanged further attacks.

Israel Hits Nuclear and Military Targets
Israeli fighter jets and long-range missiles struck several high-value targets across Iran, including the underground nuclear complex in Tehran and a nuclear facility in Isfahan, just hours apart. State-run IRIB confirmed air defenses were activated in multiple cities, including Karaj and West Tehran, while several incoming missiles were intercepted south of the capital.

Israel also claimed it had successfully targeted missile production sites and eliminated key figures in Iran’s military leadership. Among the reported casualties was General Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), although this remains unconfirmed by independent sources.

Iran Strikes Back with Missile Barrage
Iran retaliated with hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones aimed at central Israel, marking its largest-ever direct attack. Tel Aviv and Jerusalem were hit by a wave of projectiles, many of which were intercepted by Israeli air defense systems with support from the United States, as confirmed by officials cited in Axios.

Iranian state TV claimed its air defenses shot down at least one Israeli jet and captured the pilot—claims dismissed as false by the Israeli military.

Global Reaction and Diplomatic Push
Amid rising fears of a wider regional war, both nations have signaled their intent to escalate if provoked further. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the campaign was necessary to counter an existential threat from Iran, invoking comparisons to the Holocaust. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the Israeli attacks “wicked and bloody,” promising that Israel would face a “bitter fate.”

Former US President Donald Trump also weighed in, warning Iran that “it will only get worse,” and claimed that Iranian representatives had reached out, signaling interest in a possible deal.

UN Emergency Meeting and India’s Concerns
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session following Iran’s request under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which recognizes a country’s right to self-defense. The move is being supported by Russia and China. However, Israel has made it clear that it will not stop operations until threats from Iran are “fully eliminated.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the world leaders briefed by Netanyahu. India has said it is “deeply concerned” by the unfolding events and urged both nations to avoid further escalation.
