No Evidence Linking Covid Vaccines to Sudden Deaths: Health Ministry.
The Union Health Ministry has clarified that there is no scientific evidence linking COVID-19 vaccination to sudden cardiac deaths among adults. The statement comes amid ongoing public concern and speculation around recent deaths due to cardiac arrest.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the ministry cited extensive studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), which found no direct association between the vaccines and sudden unexplained deaths.
“These studies have conclusively established that there is no direct link between COVID-19 vaccination and the reports of sudden deaths in the country,” the ministry said.
Lifestyle, Genetics More Likely Factors
The findings emphasized that sudden cardiac deaths can result from a complex mix of factors, including genetic predisposition, underlying medical conditions, risky lifestyle habits, and post-Covid complications. The studies reaffirm the safety and effectiveness of India’s Covid vaccines, noting that serious side effects remain extremely rare.
“Vaccines in India are safe and effective,” the ministry reiterated, urging the public not to fall for misinformation.
Experts Warn Against Misinformation
Health experts have warned that speculative claims linking Covid vaccines to sudden deaths are misleading and not backed by scientific consensus. They cautioned that such misinformation could undermine public confidence in vaccination efforts and contribute to vaccine hesitancy.
“Statements not supported by evidence risk damaging the credibility of the vaccination programme, which has saved millions of lives,” the ministry noted.
Political Remarks Spark Clarification
The government’s clarification followed recent remarks by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who suggested that “hasty approval and distribution” of Covid vaccines might be connected to a rise in heart attack cases in Hassan. While the ministry did not name the chief minister, the timing of its statement suggested a direct response.
The Health Ministry reaffirmed that all Covid vaccines approved for use in India underwent rigorous scientific evaluation and regulatory review.
