Mendis Ton, Bowlers Shine as Sri Lanka Thump Bangladesh by 99 Runs to Seal ODI Series
Sri Lanka sealed a 2-1 series win over Bangladesh with a dominant 99-run victory in the third and final ODI at Pallekele on Tuesday, July 8. A sparkling century from Kusal Mendis (124 off 114) and a disciplined bowling performance led by Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera helped the hosts register their eighth straight bilateral ODI series win.
After electing to bat, Sri Lanka posted 285/7, recovering from early setbacks thanks to Mendis’ assured knock and a crucial 124-run partnership with skipper Charith Asalanka (58 off 68). Mendis, who struck 14 fours and a six, brought up his sixth ODI hundred in 95 balls and anchored the innings till the 47th over.
Bangladesh’s chase never took off as they lost both openers inside four overs. Only Towhid Hridoy (51 off 78) offered resistance as wickets tumbled around him. The visitors were bowled out for 186 in 39.4 overs, conceding a heavy defeat.
Sri Lanka’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Asitha Fernando (3/33) and Chameera (3/51) striking early, while Wellalage (2/33) and Hasaranga (2/35) cleaned up the tail.
Mendis was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series, finishing as the top run-scorer with 225 runs from three matches.
