Amaal Mallik Distances Himself from Anu Malik: ‘I Don’t Consider Him Family.’

Music composer Amaal Mallik has spoken candidly about his strained relationship with uncle Anu Malik, especially in light of the sexual harassment allegations made against the veteran music director during India’s MeToo movement.

In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal said he deliberately chose to remain silent at the time, not out of fear, but because he never considered Anu Malik part of his inner circle.

“I didn’t talk or support Anu Malik when he was accused during the MeToo movement,” he said. “It wasn’t my concern because I don’t consider him my family. I was very embarrassed when he was accused of these things. We never had a relationship.”

Referring to the multiple accusations made against Anu Malik, Amaal added: “If so many people raised their voices, I believe there must be some truth to it. Why would people come forward otherwise? There’s no smoke without fire—five people can’t all be lying.”

The allegations against Anu Malik emerged in 2018, with several women from the music industry accusing him of inappropriate behaviour. He stepped down as a judge on a popular television singing show amid mounting pressure.

Recalling a conversation with his father during that period, Amaal shared, “Once my dad asked me if I too would be dragged into this movement. I said, ‘There’s no chance.’ I would never ask for physical favours in return for songs. Every girl who has worked with me has felt safe.”

Amaal also clarified his current dynamic with Anu Malik, stating that while he is civil in public, the relationship is purely superficial.

“I’m respectful when I see him in public, but after learning about his wrongdoings, I chose to distance myself. I don’t have any connection with his family. I haven’t met them in years and don’t attend their parties. They were invited to Armaan’s wedding, and they came—but our relationship is more professional rivalry than family.”

Amaal recently made headlines for admitting he had emotionally detached himself from his extended family, underscoring the deep divide between him and his uncle.
