The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is preparing two special modules on Operation Sindoor, India’s recent military response to terror infrastructure across Pakistan, to educate school students about the country’s growing military prowess, education ministry sources confirmed on Saturday.

According to officials, the modules will be launched soon and will cater to two student groups:

  • Classes 3 to 8

  • Classes 9 to 12

“These 8–10 page modules will detail the achievements of India and its Armed Forces, especially during Operation Sindoor, to help students understand how Pakistan was once again defeated,” a source said.

What is Operation Sindoor?

Launched in the early hours of May 7, 2025, Operation Sindoor was a retaliatory strike by India on nine terror and military sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.

The strikes led to a four-day military escalation between India and Pakistan, involving fighter jets, drones, missiles, and heavy artillery, before both countries agreed to cease hostilities on May 10.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in June, described Operation Sindoor as the natural successor to the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, adding that India’s firm response had forced Pakistan to seek a ceasefire.

Part of a Larger Curriculum Push

NCERT regularly develops special modules to supplement school textbooks with themes on contemporary national and global issues. As of June 2025, it has published 16 such modules, including those on:

  • Viksit Bharat

  • Nari Shakti Vandan

  • G20

  • Chandrayaan Utsav

Future modules will cover topics like Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the horrors of Partition, and India’s emergence as a space power, including Chandrayaan, Aditya L1, and astronaut Subhanshu Shukla’s journey to the International Space Station.

In its updated Class 8 social science textbook, NCERT has already drawn historical parallels between modern military operations and past Indian military tactics. The book compares the 2016 surgical strike to Maratha ruler Shivaji’s night raid on Mughal commander Shaista Khan, highlighting continuity in strategic thinking.

The upcoming modules on Operation Sindoor aim to further instill a sense of national pride, awareness of India’s defense capabilities, and contextual understanding of modern military history among schoolchildren.
