Divya Deshmukh Holds Koneru Humpy Again, Tiebreakers to Decide Women’s World Cup Winner.

The 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup final will be decided via tiebreakers after both classical games between Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy ended in draws. Sunday’s Game 2 in Batumi, Georgia, saw Divya, playing with black pieces, hold her ground against the veteran to force a decider.

With both classical encounters ending peacefully, the all-Indian final will move to rapid and blitz formats on Monday, July 28, to crown India’s first-ever Women’s World Cup champion.

How Game 2 Played Out

After a cautious first game, Divya appeared more settled in Game 2. Humpy opted for a Queen’s Pawn opening and enjoyed the bishop pair early on, but Divya defended solidly. As the game transitioned into an endgame with queens and minor pieces, Humpy attempted to generate play with a pawn sacrifice.

However, Divya navigated the complications well. Though briefly a pawn down, she recovered and repeated moves to secure a 34-move draw.
What Happens Next: Tiebreak Format

To break the deadlock, the players will contest a series of faster games on Monday:

  • Two games of 15 minutes + 10-second increment
  • If tied, two games of 10 minutes + 10-second increment
  • If still level, two blitz games of 5 minutes + 3-second increment

If needed, a final Armageddon game (3 minutes + 2-second increment) will determine the winner

Historic Final, Historic Outcome

This is the first-ever all-Indian final at the FIDE Women’s World Cup, guaranteeing a maiden title for the country regardless of the result. While Humpy brings decades of experience to the board, 18-year-old Divya has impressed with her maturity and composure under pressure.

The stage is set for a dramatic finale as Indian chess awaits its newest World Cup champion.
