Cloudburst Triggers Tragedy in Uttarakhand: 4 Dead, Dozens Feared Trapped in Mudslide.

A sudden cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday afternoon unleashed a deadly mudslide and flash floods that swept through Dharali village, killing at least four people and leaving many feared trapped under debris and sludge.

The disaster struck around 1:45 pm following intense rainfall in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river, triggering a torrent of water and debris that tore through the remote mountain settlement. Disturbing visuals from the scene show panicked residents fleeing for safety as a wall of water surged toward their homes. In one video, a man is seen stumbling through the sludge, as others scream for help.

Rescue efforts are underway, with teams from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Indian Army racing against time to locate survivors buried beneath the wreckage.

“The administration is fully alert, and every effort is being made to assist those affected,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said. He confirmed ongoing evacuation and rescue operations across the impacted region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with CM Dhami to take stock of the situation, assuring full central support. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also reviewed the developments with state officials.

The Army’s Central Command confirmed the extent of the disaster and said troops have been deployed for immediate rescue work. “The extent of damage is being assessed, and relief efforts are ongoing. The Army stands with the people in this hour of need,” the Army said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Uttarkashi police shared images of the devastation and urged residents to stay away from swollen rivers. “Keep yourself, children, and animals at a safe distance from water bodies,” officials warned in a public advisory.

The incident comes amid continued monsoon fury in Uttarakhand. The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red’ alert for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state, with a ‘yellow’ alert in place for the rest of the week. On Monday, two people were killed in separate rain-related incidents in Rudraprayag, where landslides also buried two roadside shops.

As rescue operations continue, officials fear the death toll may rise. Dharali’s cloudburst tragedy underscores the increasing vulnerability of hill settlements to extreme weather events during the monsoon.
