Gadkari’s Bold Response to US Tariff Threats Against India

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has criticized the practice of “dadagiri” (bullying) on the global stage, attributing it to the economic and technological dominance of certain countries. His comments come as India faces unprecedented tariffs from the United States.

Speaking at the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) in Nagpur, Gadkari urged India to strengthen its exports, reduce dependence on imports, and harness science and technology to become self-reliant. He said, “Those who engage in ‘dadagiri’ do so because they have economic strength and superior technology. If we improve our technology and resources, we will not need to bully anyone, as our culture values the welfare of the world.”

The remarks come after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods on August 6, raising total duties to 50%. This move targets sectors including textiles, gems, pharmaceuticals, and auto parts, making India one of the most heavily taxed US trading partners.

Washington has linked the tariffs to India’s ongoing purchase of Russian oil, which New Delhi defends as critical for its energy security. The situation has escalated into the most serious trade dispute between the two countries in decades, with the US suspending trade talks and warning of further sanctions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded firmly, emphasizing that India will prioritize the welfare of its farmers, fishermen, and dairy workers, even if it means “paying a heavy price.”
