Putin Calls for BRICS Financial Reform, Strengthened Russia-China Partnership Ahead of SCO Summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Russia and China are “united in strengthening” BRICS to counter “discriminatory sanctions” and push for reforms in global financial institutions.

Speaking to China’s Xinhua News Agency ahead of the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, Putin described BRICS as a “key pillar of global architecture” and urged a “new financial system” based on fairness and equal access. He accused the West of using financial tools as “neo-colonialism” and said BRICS aims to serve the interests of the “Global Majority.”

Putin is in China for the SCO summit from August 31 to September 1 and is expected to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Russian leader also praised China’s role in the G20, noting that along with BRICS members, it helped shift the group’s agenda towards the priorities of the Global South. He welcomed the African Union’s inclusion in the G20, calling it a step towards stronger coordination with BRICS.
