Two Indian Tourists Jailed for Robbing Sex Workers in Singapore Hotels.
Two Indian men have been sentenced in Singapore to five years and one month in prison, along with 12 strokes of the cane, for robbing and assaulting two sex workers in hotel rooms while on holiday. The accused, Arokkiyasami Daison (23) and Rajendran Mayilarasan (27), pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt during the robberies, according to The Straits Times.
Incident Details
The men arrived in Singapore on April 24. Two days later, they were approached in Little India by a man offering contact information for two women providing sexual services. Arokkiyasami suggested robbing the women to obtain money, and Rajendran agreed. They lured the first victim to a hotel room around 6 p.m., tied her hands and legs, assaulted her, and stole SGD 2,000, jewellery, passport, and bank cards.
Later that night, they targeted a second woman at another hotel. They dragged her by her arms, covered her mouth, and stole SGD 800, two mobile phones, and her passport, threatening her not to leave until they returned. The crimes came to light when the second victim confided in another person the next day, prompting police intervention.
Mitigation and Sentencing
During mitigation, both men, unrepresented in court, pleaded for leniency. Arokkiyasami cited family financial difficulties following his father’s death, while Rajendran mentioned his wife and child struggling financially in India. Under Singapore law, those who voluntarily cause injury during a robbery face 5–20 years in prison and a minimum of 12 cane strokes. The court imposed the minimum caning alongside their prison term.
