Five Detained After Alleged Assassination Attempt on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.

Five people were arrested following an alleged assassination attempt on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, Energy Minister Ines Manzano confirmed. Noboa’s convoy was reportedly surrounded by around 500 people throwing rocks while traveling to Cañar province to announce infrastructure projects.

“Shooting at the president’s car, throwing stones, damaging state property – that’s just criminal. We will not allow this,” Manzano said. While bullet damage was later found on the car, the President was unharmed. Authorities indicated that those detained will face charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

The national Indigenous federation CONAIE claimed that orchestrated violence targeted protesters, including elderly women, during “brutal police and military action.” A video circulated on X showed a woman in traditional dress being detained by masked officers.

The incident comes amid ongoing unrest in Ecuador after the government announced the removal of a diesel subsidy to reduce public spending. In recent weeks, Indigenous-led demonstrations have blocked roads and clashed with security forces, with one incident last week leaving a civilian dead.

Over the weekend, a state of emergency was declared in 10 provinces due to “serious internal unrest.” This is not the first attack on Noboa’s convoy; in September, around 350 people targeted a motorcade in Imbabura province during a protest.
