Trump Reacts to Missing Nobel Peace Prize: Says Machado Accepted It “in His Honour”

US President Donald Trump reacted on Friday after missing out on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado accepted the award “in his honour.”

“The person who got the Nobel Prize called me today and said, ‘I’m accepting this in your honour because you deserved it,’” Trump told reporters. Adding a touch of humor, he said, “I did not say then, ‘Give it to me,’ though,” prompting laughter among those present. He reiterated that he has “been helping her along the way” and expressed satisfaction over his contributions, saying, “I am happy because I saved millions of lives.”

After the announcement, social media platform X was flooded with posts showing Trump looking disappointed, with captions poking fun at his reaction to missing the award.

Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting democratic rights in Venezuela and striving for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy, dedicated her award not only to the people of Venezuela but also to Trump. She wrote on X, “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!”

The White House criticized the Nobel Committee’s decision, claiming that politics outweighed merit in the selection process. Spokesperson Steven Cheung posted on X: “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”

Trump has consistently claimed that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts in brokering eight peace deals, including agreements involving Israel and Gaza and a four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan in May. He described the latter as being resolved “largely through trade,” including threats of tariffs, adding that both sides were nuclear powers and that his intervention stopped the fighting.

While Trump has repeatedly taken credit for these diplomatic efforts, India has strongly dismissed his claims regarding the conflict resolution.

This episode marks a personal setback for Trump and also represents a diplomatic disappointment for Pakistan, which had formally nominated him, portraying him as a “champion of peace.” Despite this, Trump maintains that he should have received the Nobel Peace Prize multiple times, citing his “unmatched peace record” in international conflicts.
