Trump Meets Lula da Silva in Malaysia, Sees ‘Promising Deals’ for US-Brazil Trade.
US President Donald Trump, visiting Malaysia, met Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday, expressing optimism about advancing US-Brazil relations and potential “pretty good deals” for both countries.
Trump said, “It’s a great honor to be with the President of Brazil… We always have had a good relationship, and I think it will continue.” Lula also expressed confidence, adding, “There’s no reason for having any other kind of conflict between Brazil and the United States.”
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, with both leaders discussing bilateral trade ties and ways to resolve ongoing economic disputes. Following the talks, Lula tweeted that their teams would meet immediately to address tariffs and sanctions affecting Brazilian authorities.
The meeting comes months after Trump raised tariffs on most Brazilian imports from 10% to 50%, a move Lula called a “mistake.” The hike has affected global trade flows, particularly in the beef sector, while Brazil’s exports to China continue to grow.
This engagement marks one of the first high-level interactions between the two nations in recent months, signaling a potential revival of trade discussions and closer economic cooperation.
