R Ashwin lauds Harmanpreet-led India for honouring women’s cricket legends: ‘Men’s team never did this’

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has praised Harmanpreet Kaur and her team for their heartfelt gesture following India’s maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup victory, calling it an act of genuine respect that the men’s team has “never done.”

After India’s triumph in Navi Mumbai, the women’s players invited trailblazers Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra — now commentators — to join them on stage, lift the trophy, and celebrate together. The moment captured the spirit of gratitude and recognition that moved both fans and former players alike.

Ashwin’s powerful words

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said the women’s team showed rare grace and humility by including their predecessors in their celebrations. “After India’s win, they gave the trophy to Mithali Raj. Why did they do that? I take my hat off to the Indian women’s team for that. The men’s team has never done something like this,” he said.

He recalled how players like Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali Raj, and Jhulan Goswami had carried the hopes of Indian cricket for years, from heartbreak in 2017 to ultimate redemption in 2025. “We often say nice things about past generations when the cameras are on, but very few actually show gratitude. What the women’s team did was genuine — no speeches, no PR, just respect,” Ashwin added.

Jhulan’s emotional moment

For Jhulan Goswami, who retired in 2022, the victory was deeply personal. The veteran pacer broke down in tears as she finally held the World Cup trophy — a dream she had chased for nearly two decades. “Before this World Cup, the girls came to my room and said, ‘We’ll do it for you.’ They kept their word. That’s why I couldn’t stop crying,” Jhulan told Star Sports.

A win that transcended cricket

India’s long-awaited triumph wasn’t just about ending years of near-misses; it was a celebration of legacy. The image of Harmanpreet lifting the trophy alongside Mithali, Jhulan, and Anjum symbolised the unity of generations — a powerful reminder that true champions never forget those who paved the way.
