SIR Phase II: Over 5 Crore Voter Forms Distributed in a Single Day Across 9 States and 3 UTs.
The Election Commission (EC) reported that more than five crore voter forms were distributed in a single day as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across nine states and three Union territories.
According to the EC’s Thursday bulletin, over 42 crore SIR forms have been handed out so far in 12 states and UTs, covering nearly 83% of the 50.99 crore eligible voters. A previous update on Wednesday had noted that over 37 crore forms were distributed by 3 pm.
Where the SIR Is Underway
Phase II involves Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. Elections are scheduled in 2026 for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal, while Assam’s roll revision will be announced separately.
Timeline
The SIR exercise began on November 4 and will continue until December 4. The draft electoral rolls are set for release on December 9, with final rolls scheduled for February 7, 2026.
Ensuring Inclusivity
Political parties such as Trinamool Congress and DMK had raised concerns about potential disenfranchisement due to missing documents. In response, the EC has included Aadhaar cards as indicative documents in all 12 states and UTs.
Electoral registration officers will issue notices to voters whose previous SIR details are missing or mismatched, allowing them to submit supporting documents after form distribution if required. The EC described the exercise as a major step toward accurate, inclusive voter registration, aimed at ensuring all eligible citizens can participate in upcoming elections.
