Ashes 2025: Pat Cummins to Miss Brisbane Test as Australia Name Unchanged Squad
Australia’s Test captain Pat Cummins will miss the Brisbane Test against England, with Cricket Australia naming an unchanged squad for the second match of the 2025-26 Ashes series. In his absence, Steve Smith will continue as stand-in captain.
Fast bowlers Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood, who were sidelined for the first Test due to injuries, will also miss the Brisbane clash, which begins on December 4. Cummins will travel with the squad to continue his recovery and prepare for a potential return in later matches.
Australia Squad for Brisbane Test:
Steve Smith (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster
Cummins, 32, had been seen training with the pink ball and had expressed cautious optimism about making a return. “It’s on track and pulling up pretty well. [I’m] half a chance for the next game. I’m pretty hopeful, and it’s better than it was a few weeks ago,” he said on Fox Sports.
Australia coach Andrew McDonald highlighted the need for caution. “The intensity was there, the ball speed was there. There are a lot of positives, but now it’s about building resilience within the soft tissue and making sure we’re not putting him at risk by accelerating his return,” he said.
Australia currently lead the series 1-0 following their thrilling two-day victory in Perth.
