Not Yet 15, Vaibhav Suryavanshi Blasts His Third T20 Century Against Maharashtra

Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi added another chapter to his extraordinary rise on Tuesday, smashing his maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy century at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The Bihar teenager brought up his hundred off just 57 balls against Prithvi Shaw’s Maharashtra, striking seven sixes and seven fours in a commanding innings on a pitch that offered little to attacking stroke makers.

Vaibhav carried his bat for an unbeaten 108 off 61 deliveries, guiding Bihar to a competitive 176 for 3. With more than half the team’s total coming from his bat, he took charge on a surface where timing was not easy, showcasing remarkable composure for someone still only 14.

The knock further strengthens his burgeoning reputation. Vaibhav already owns three T20 hundreds — including a record-breaking century for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL — all before turning 15.

His innings on Tuesday was a display of maturity and game awareness. After Bihar slipped to 31 for 2 inside the powerplay, Vaibhav rebuilt the innings alongside Aakash Raj in a stabilising 70-run stand for the third wicket. He took 37 balls to reach his fifty, carefully assessing conditions and treating quality spinners Vicky Ostwal and Jalaj Saxena with due respect before opening up later in the innings.

Vaibhav’s recent form has been sensational. A key member of India A at the Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, he scored 239 runs — including a blazing 32-ball century against the UAE — at an average of 59.75 and an astounding strike rate of 243.87.

His rise has been meteoric. Debuting in the Ranji Trophy at just 12, he became a household name after a breakout IPL season with the Rajasthan Royals, scoring 252 runs at a strike rate of 206.55. His 38-ball 101 against Gujarat Titans — the second-fastest century in IPL history — also made him the youngest centurion in the tournament.

He has been just as dominant in age-group cricket, recently smashing a 78-ball hundred against Australia Under-19s — the quickest ever by an Indian in U-19 Tests.
