Donald Trump Honoured with Inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at 2026 World Cup Draw.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup draw took on a political edge as FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to U.S. President Donald Trump. Held at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., the award recognises individuals who take “exceptional actions for peace” and foster global unity.
A pre-recorded montage featured world leaders including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with clips of Trump highlighting his diplomatic efforts. FIFA credited Trump with helping “broker ceasefires and promote diplomatic engagements,” framing his presidency as focused on global peace initiatives.
Trump Accepts Award
Trump received the medal and a gold trophy depicting hands holding the globe. In his speech, he claimed credit for resolving conflicts such as Congo, India-Pakistan, and Russia-Ukraine, saying:
“This is one of the great honours of my life. Beyond awards, what matters most is that we saved millions of lives… India-Pakistan, Congo, and other conflicts we helped resolve before they escalated.”
He also praised Infantino for record-breaking ticket sales, and continued positioning himself as a candidate worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize, recently renaming the U.S. Institute of Peace to the Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace.
Global Reactions
Infantino lauded Trump’s peace efforts during the ceremony. While FIFA described the award as representing “over 5 billion football fans,” critics raised concerns about blending a major football event with political messaging. The decision has sparked debate in both sporting and political circles worldwide.
