Golden Globes Nominations Kick Off Hollywood Awards Season.

Hollywood’s awards season is officially heating up as the Golden Globes nominations are unveiled Monday. Leading the race are the musical blockbuster “Wicked: For Good,” the Shakespearean family drama “Hamnet,” and the period horror thriller “Sinners.”

Other strong contenders include Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically charged “One Battle After Another,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the mid-century sports dramedy “Marty Supreme” with Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Set for January 11, the Globes are widely seen as a bellwether for the Oscars. This year, each main category features six nominees instead of five, increasing competition and red carpet excitement.

Comedy and Musical Highlights

Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis notes, “The headline this year is: Comedy is where the drama is.” In the comedy/musical category, “Wicked: For Good” faces competition from “One Battle After Another,” “Marty Supreme,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. Ariana Grande (Glinda) and Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) are top acting contenders.

Drama Dominates

Period dramas are leading in the main categories. “Hamnet,” directed by Chloe Zhao, follows William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Agnes (Jessie Buckley) navigating life, love, and loss in plague-stricken Elizabethan England. “Sinners,” from Ryan Coogler, stars Michael B. Jordan as twins entangled in crime in 1930s Mississippi, a box-office hit and Critics Choice favorite. Guillermo Del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” with Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, is also in the mix.

Television Spotlight

On the small screen, Emmy favorites “Severance” and “The Pitt” lead drama nominations, while comedies “The Studio” and “Hacks” dominate. Limited series “Adolescence” is also expected to shine.

Actors Marlon Wayans and Skye Marshall will announce the main nominees Monday at 1315 GMT. Comedian Nikki Glaser returns as host for the January 11 ceremony in Beverly Hills, following last year’s successful broadcast watched by over 10 million viewers.

As Oscar nominations loom on January 22, the Golden Globes provide an early look at the frontrunners shaping this year’s Hollywood awards race.
