Stock Market Update: Sensex Up 176 Points, Nifty Near 25,900; SBI, Eternal Gain 1%
Benchmark equity indices opened higher on Wednesday, attempting a rebound after Tuesday’s sell-off. The BSE Sensex rose 176 points to 84,856, while the Nifty 50 added 42 points to open at 25,902. Bharti Airtel, Eternal, and Reliance Industries were among the early gainers in the Sensex 30 pack.
In commodities, MCX Silver March futures hit fresh record highs near ₹2,05,665, while the Indian rupee opened weaker at ₹91.07 against the US dollar.
Global Markets
Asian markets recovered some losses by mid-day, with Japan’s Nikkei, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, and China’s Shanghai Composite rising 0.2–0.4%, and South Korea’s KOSPI and Taiwan gaining around 0.7%.
Overnight in the US, Wall Street ended mixed: the S&P 500 fell 0.24%, marking its third consecutive decline, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.23% and the Dow Jones dropped 0.62%, as investors digested the delayed release of the November jobs report.
FII & DII Activity
On the domestic front, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading equities worth ₹2,060.76 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth ₹770.76 crore on Tuesday, December 16.
