A horrific case of mob violence has emerged from Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, where a married couple was burnt alive after villagers accused them of practising witchcraft.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at No. 1 Beloguri Munda village in the Howraghat area. The victims were identified as Gardi Birowa (43) and his wife Mira Birowa (33). According to police, a group of villagers forcibly entered the couple’s house and attacked them with sharp weapons. After the assault, the attackers set the house on fire, trapping the couple inside. Both victims died after being burnt alive.
Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and launched an investigation. All accused involved in the attack have been arrested, officials said, adding that they are being questioned to ascertain the motive and sequence of events. Speaking to PTI, a police official said the area remains plagued by deep-rooted superstitious beliefs, which often lead to violent acts such as witch-hunting.
