Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning on January 12 in connection with the Karur stampede case, sources said.
He has been asked to appear before the CBI headquarters in New Delhi, as the agency intensifies its probe into the tragedy. The summons comes after the CBI questioned and recorded statements of senior TVK functionaries as part of the investigation. The stampede occurred on September 27 during a TVK public meeting in Karur attended by Vijay, killing at least 41 people and injuring over 110 others.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court ordered a CBI investigation to ascertain the cause of the stampede and fix accountability. The court also constituted a three-member monitoring committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, to oversee the probe and ensure that it remains independent and impartial. The order was passed on a plea filed by TVK seeking an unbiased inquiry.
Since taking over the case, the CBI has been examining permissions granted for the event, crowd control arrangements, police deployment and emergency response mechanisms. The agency is also recording statements of party functionaries and officials associated with the organisation of the event.
