Actor Emraan Hashmi has said he chose to be part of Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web because of its restrained and intelligent approach to heroism, which he described as a refreshing departure from loud, swagger-driven narratives.

The trailer of the upcoming Netflix series was unveiled on Wednesday, setting up a tense battle of wits within the customs enforcement system, where precision, secrecy and intelligence determine survival.

Sharing his thoughts on the project, Hashmi said the response to the teaser had been encouraging and called the show a rewarding first collaboration with creator Neeraj Pandey. “What stood out to me was its grounded, intelligent take on heroism — a story shaped by quiet courage, discipline and duty rather than loud bravado,” he said.

The crime thriller explores the inner workings of international smuggling networks, tracing key corridors across Al-Dera, Addis Ababa, Milan and Bangkok. At its core is a specialised customs task force operating from Mumbai International Airport, tasked with dismantling a global syndicate built on coded routes, false manifests and calculated misdirection.

Hashmi plays Arjun Meena, an uncompromising customs officer who leads a team that includes Mitali Kamath (Amruta Khanvilkar), Ravinder Gujjar (Nandish Singh Sandhu) and Prakash Kumar (Anurag Sinha). Their adversary is Bada Chaudhary, portrayed by Sharad Kelkar, whose organisation thrives on deception and international reach.

Creator Neeraj Pandey said customs enforcement was a world he had long wanted to explore, calling the series a realistic, pressure-driven crime thriller. He added that the collaboration with Netflix follows the success of the Khakee franchise.

Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web premieres on Netflix on January 14, 2026.
