Not Goa or Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram Emerges as India’s Fastest-Growing Destination for International Travellers.
Travel is evolving. Modern explorers are seeking unique experiences, offbeat destinations, and slower, more immersive journeys, and India is seeing this shift reflected in inbound tourism. Moving beyond familiar names like Goa, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Delhi, international travellers are now discovering Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram.
According to Agoda’s annual New Horizons Rankings, Thiruvananthapuram has emerged as the fastest-growing destination for international visitors to India, jumping 11 spots from 33rd in 2024 to 22nd in 2025. The rankings track accommodation booking data to identify Asian cities seeing the fastest growth in international travel.
God’s Own Country in Focus
Thiruvananthapuram, nestled between hilltops, beaches, and backwaters, offers the quintessential Kerala experience. From tranquil beaches and historic temples to access to backwaters and hill stations, the city provides travellers both calm and adventure. Its long-standing association with Ayurveda and wellness tourism adds to its allure, making it more than a stopover—it’s a place to settle into and recharge.
The City of Anantha
The city’s name, Thiruvananthapuram, means “City of Anantha” in Malayalam, named after the cosmic serpent Lord Anantha, who coils around Lord Vishnu. The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of India’s richest temples, anchors the city’s cultural and spiritual identity, drawing both pilgrims and travellers with its striking Dravidian architecture and centuries-old history.

Beyond spirituality, the city blends culture and leisure effortlessly. Kovalam Beach entices visitors with golden sands, lighthouse views, and water sports, while Napier Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery offer a deep dive into Kerala’s art, architecture, and history, from Tanjore paintings to Mughal miniatures.
Redefining Travel in India
This trend toward experience-led, slower travel is not limited to international tourists. On the domestic front, cities like Indore are also gaining popularity, thanks to their mix of vibrant street food culture, cleanliness, and modern urban amenities.

With eco-tourism, cultural experiences, and immersive journeys shaping the way people travel, destinations like Thiruvananthapuram are redefining how India is explored, proving that the country has much more to offer than its traditional hotspots.
