Djokovic Shrugs Off Retirement Talk, Sets Sights on Australian Open 2026

Novak Djokovic has dismissed retirement rumors and declared he still believes he can triumph at the Australian Open 2026. The 38-year-old Serbian star, who holds 24 Grand Slam titles, is just one win away from surpassing Margaret Court for the all-time record.

Djokovic last lifted a major trophy at the 2023 US Open and has faced mixed results since. In 2025, he reached the semi-finals of all four Slams but was stopped by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. He also retired from last year’s Australian Open semi-final against Alexander Zverev due to injury. Despite the challenges, Djokovic says tennis still gives him an unmatched adrenaline rush.

“I’ve broken almost every record in the sport. I’m grateful to tennis for letting me live my dream,” he said. “It’s not just the achievements—it’s the passion, the love for the game, and the energy on court. That adrenaline is almost like a drug.”

On retirement, Djokovic was firm: “I’m still #4 in the world, competing at the highest level. When the time comes for a farewell tour, I’ll share it. Right now, I’m focused on competing.” “When I’m healthy, I can beat anyone,” he added, pointing to his 2025 quarter-final win over Alcaraz. “Sinner and Alcaraz are playing at a high level, but that doesn’t mean nobody else has a chance. I like my chances.”

Djokovic will start his Australian Open campaign against Pedro Martinez on Monday, January 19.
