Trump Threatens 50% Tariff, Decertifies Canadian Jets in Trade Showdown

US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Canada, threatening a 50% tariff on all Canadian aircraft sold to the US and decertifying Bombardier jets over a dispute involving Gulfstream business jet certifications. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the measures would remain in place until Canada approves Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 models, accusing Ottawa of illegally blocking certification and delaying sales.

“We are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all aircraft made in Canada, until Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified,” Trump wrote. The dispute adds diplomatic tension, especially amid reports of meetings between the Trump administration and an Albertan separatist movement.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized:
“We expect the US administration to respect Canadian sovereignty.”

This action follows Trump’s recent pattern of using tariffs as leverage, including an executive order targeting countries supplying oil to Cuba.
