Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day official visit to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, aimed at strengthening India–Malaysia relations and injecting fresh momentum into the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will include wide-ranging discussions on political, economic and strategic cooperation.
India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, said the talks will focus on expanding collaboration in areas such as trade and the economy, emerging technologies, energy and education. Both sides are expected to explore new avenues of cooperation beyond traditional sectors, in keeping with changing regional and global dynamics.
PM Modi’s visit has generated significant anticipation in Malaysia, particularly among the Indian diaspora, which is one of the largest overseas Indian communities in the country. The trip is expected to further strengthen engagement in trade, finance, security and cultural exchanges, while reinforcing strong people-to-people ties.
A major highlight of the visit will be the Prime Minister’s interaction with the Indian community at a large event titled ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’ in Kuala Lumpur. The programme will feature cultural performances and will be jointly addressed by Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, reflecting the deepening bilateral relationship.
Welcoming the visit, ASEAN India Economic Council (AIEC) Chairman Ramesh Kodammal said the Malaysian government and people are enthusiastically looking forward to the occasion. He said the visit presents an important opportunity to take India–Malaysia ties to the next level.
Kodammal noted that bilateral trade stood at around USD 20 billion in 2023–24 and is expected to grow further, alongside stronger India–ASEAN and India–Malaysia business linkages.
Members of the Indian diaspora have also expressed excitement, recalling PM Modi’s last visit to Malaysia a decade ago and describing his return as a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to close bilateral and cultural ties.
Delegation-level talks and the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding are scheduled for Sunday.
