Narendra Modi, Emmanuel Macron Set for Key Mumbai Talks; Defence, AI in Spotlight
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron at the start of his three-day India visit, signalling fresh momentum in bilateral ties. In a post on X, Modi wrote that India looks forward to giving “new momentum” to the strategic partnership, adding that he would meet Macron in Mumbai and later in New Delhi.
Macron, travelling with First Lady Brigitte Macron and a delegation of business and technology leaders, said the visit aims to deepen cooperation across economic, industrial, cultural and digital sectors.
Strategic Partnership in Focus
Macron’s visit from February 17 to 19 is expected to centre on artificial intelligence collaboration, defence cooperation and broader geopolitical alignment. Defence discussions are likely to include progress on joint manufacturing projects, including helicopters and HAMMER precision-guided missiles, as both nations look to strengthen long-term defence industrial ties.
Artificial intelligence is also set to feature prominently, with Macron scheduled to participate in the AI Impact Summit during his stay.
High-Level Engagements in Mumbai and Delhi
The French President was received at Mumbai airport by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
This marks Macron’s fourth visit to India, reflecting the growing depth of India–France relations, particularly in defence, technology, and Indo-Pacific cooperation. The Mumbai bilateral meeting is expected to lay the groundwork for expanded collaboration across strategic sectors.
