McCullum Keen to Continue as England Coach Despite T20 World Cup Semi Loss

England coach Brendon McCullum has made it clear that he wants to continue in his role, even after his side’s narrow 7-run defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former New Zealand captain emphasized that he still sees plenty of unfinished business with the team across all formats.

“I love the job,” McCullum said. “It’s challenging, but we’ve achieved some really cool things over the last few years. There’s still so much more to do, and I would love to carry on. For now, it’s about reflecting and seeing what’s working and what isn’t.”

The T20 World Cup followed a difficult winter for England, highlighted by a 4-1 Ashes loss to Australia, which prompted the ECB to launch a review into team performance and dressing room culture, scrutinizing the roles of both McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key.

McCullum acknowledged that England did not fully play the aggressive Bazball style in Australia, but he praised the white-ball unit under Harry Brook’s captaincy for building a strong identity and performing well after the Ashes.

“Did we play the style we wanted in Australia? Probably not. That’s something we need to have a serious conversation about,” he said. Contracted until the end of 2027, McCullum is expected to lead England through the 2027 ODI World Cup and a home Ashes series. The ECB plans to complete its review ahead of England’s next series: a Test tour of New Zealand in June.

Reflecting on the intense schedule, McCullum added: “After being on the road so much, it’s about taking time to rest, reflect, and ensure we’re clear on what’s working and what needs adjustment for the team.”
