After a Tough Tournament, Abhishek Sharma Eyes a Virat Kohli-Like Final Twist

In Indian cinema, redemption often arrives just before the credits roll.

The hero might stumble through most of the film, but a powerful ending suddenly makes the entire journey feel worthwhile. Cricket tournaments often unfold in a similar fashion.

For Abhishek Sharma, the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has largely been a difficult middle act. The timing has looked off, the runs have been scarce, and the scrutiny has only grown louder with every match.

But the final chapter is still unwritten.

And if there is one recent example that proves a tournament can be salvaged in a single night, it is the story of Virat Kohli.

A Tournament That Never Quite Began

Abhishek entered the World Cup with enormous expectations.

Over the past two seasons, the aggressive left-hander had built a reputation as one of India’s most explosive T20 batters. His fearless approach during the powerplay made him a standout performer and even pushed him to the top of the ICC T20I batting rankings at one stage.

Naturally, expectations followed.

Some viewed him as India’s X-factor at the top of the order, while others saw shades of his mentor Yuvraj Singh in his fearless strokeplay.

Instead, the tournament quickly turned into a test of endurance.

A stomach infection struck early, forcing Abhishek to play India’s opening game against the United States national cricket team while unwell. The result was a first-ball duck. His condition worsened soon after, leading to hospitalisation and ruling him out of the match against Namibia national cricket team.

The illness also took a physical toll. Abhishek reportedly lost around two kilograms during that period — a significant setback for a batter whose game relies heavily on strength, timing, and power hitting.

In a packed tournament schedule like the T20 World Cup, recovery time is a luxury few players receive. Teams travel constantly, matches come every few days, and there is little space for the body to fully regain strength.

Which raises a natural question: did Abhishek ever really get the time to recover completely?

Before he could find that answer with the bat, the struggles continued.

A Run of Frustration

Back-to-back ducks against Pakistan national cricket team and Netherlands national cricket team completed an unwanted hat-trick of zeros.

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir even described him as a slogger — a remark that initially felt harsh but gradually gained traction as the tournament progressed.

Since then, Abhishek’s scores have arrived only in brief flashes rather than consistent flow.

A composed 55 against Zimbabwe national cricket team briefly eased the pressure, but scores of 15 against South Africa national cricket team, 10 against West Indies national cricket team, and nine in the semi-final against England national cricket team kept the questions alive.

Yet for those who remember the previous World Cup, the storyline feels oddly familiar.

Because India have already seen something similar before.

Kohli’s Reminder From 2024

During the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Kohli entered the tournament carrying huge expectations but struggled badly in the early stages.

Opening the batting on tricky pitches in New York, his first three scores read 1, 4 and a golden duck against the USA.

The slump continued deeper into the tournament.

Across seven matches leading into the final in Kensington Oval, Kohli’s scores were 1, 4, 0, 24, 37, 0 and 9 — a total of just 75 runs.

For a batter known for relentless consistency, it was a rare phase of struggle.

Interestingly, despite the criticism surrounding his campaign, Abhishek has actually scored more runs than Kohli had managed before that final. The youngster has 89 runs from seven matches so far.

Of course, comparing the two directly would be unfair. By that stage, Kohli had already spent more than a decade thriving under intense pressure. Abhishek is still learning how to navigate that stage.

But the narrative arc remains strikingly similar.

A highly rated batter struggling through the tournament. Doubts growing louder. A final approaching.

And then came Kohli’s moment.

In the Barbados final on June 29, Kohli delivered a match-defining 76 off 59 balls against South Africa, anchoring India to 176/7 and leading them to a dramatic seven-run victory. The innings earned him Player of the Match before he announced his retirement from T20 internationals.

Which leaves one intriguing possibility.

If Kohli could rewrite his tournament story in a single night, perhaps Abhishek might still get the same chance.

Faith Inside the Dressing Room

While the outside conversation has focused heavily on Abhishek’s form, the mood within the Indian dressing room appears very different.

After the semi-final in Mumbai, Sanju Samson made it clear that the team continues to back the struggling opener.

“We have a great dressing-room environment. Our leaders have a lot of faith in Abhishek and we’re all supporting him. Every player goes through ups and downs. It may just take a couple of good shots and everything can change in this format,” Samson said.

The sentiment closely mirrors what Rohit Sharma said about Kohli before the 2024 final.

“He’s a quality player. Form is never a problem when you’ve played this long. He’s probably saving his runs for the final,” Rohit had said then.

Kohli proved that faith right.

Whether Abhishek can deliver a similar turnaround remains to be seen, but the Indian camp clearly believes he deserves the chance to write his own story.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri believes the key lies in understanding the batter’s mindset.

“Unless the team management feels mentally he’s not there, they must judge through conversations and by watching how he bats in the nets,” Shastri said.

Meanwhile, legendary captain Kapil Dev has urged the youngster to trust himself.

“Just believe in your team and believe in yourself. One game is still left — the final,” Kapil said.

Seven matches of frustration can suddenly fade if one night goes your way.

One fearless innings. One moment of clarity. One match-winning knock.

For Abhishek Sharma, the final could be that one chance to flip the entire narrative.

Because sometimes, in cricket just like in cinema, the ending changes everything.
