Padmini Kolhapure reveals skincare secrets at 60, swears by turmeric, Vaseline and inner beauty

Padmini Kolhapure: I’ve never really followed a strict skincare routine (laughs). But I’ve always preferred natural, organic and Ayurvedic products rather than chemical-heavy ones.

I trust ingredients that come from the kitchen. If there’s one ingredient I swear by, it’s turmeric. Over the years, I’ve used it in many ways, both externally and internally. Earlier, we used to mix haldi with malai and apply it to the face. I also consume turmeric and sometimes gargle with turmeric and salt.

Q: How has your skincare evolved from your early film days to now?

Padmini Kolhapure: In those days, we wore makeup almost all the time—literally 365 days a year. We would wake up early, put on makeup, and sometimes be so tired at night that we didn’t even remove it before sleeping. Things have changed now. I try to take better care of my skin and, whenever I’m not working, I prefer wearing absolutely no makeup.

Q: What are the three non-negotiable products in your daily skincare routine?

Padmini Kolhapure: My beauty kit is actually very minimal. But three things I always carry are Vaseline, a good makeup remover to cleanse the face and remove dirt or pollution, and a sunblock. I prefer natural wipes—especially those infused with soothing ingredients like aloe vera—and sunscreens that are organic, chemical-free and paraben-free.

Q: What is your go-to makeup look?

Padmini Kolhapure: Just lipstick and kajal—that’s usually enough for me. And even that only if I have to wear makeup. Otherwise, I’m perfectly happy going without it.

Q: Your hair has always been long and beautiful. Any haircare tips?

Padmini Kolhapure: I stick to traditional methods for haircare. I like Ayurvedic shampoos with ingredients like shikakai and bhringraj. I also try to avoid using hair appliances such as dryers and curlers as much as possible. I usually wash my hair at night, towel dry it, and by morning it’s naturally dry. Less heat and fewer chemicals are better for hair health.

Q: What does “timeless beauty” mean to you?

Padmini Kolhapure: I believe beauty comes from within. If you are pure-hearted, kind and selfless, that inner beauty reflects on your face and overall well-being. Eating well, getting enough rest and staying hydrated also make a huge difference when it comes to glowing skin.

Q: How has makeup in the film industry changed from the 80s to today?

Padmini Kolhapure: Back then, we only had a couple of makeup brands to choose from. Today, the market is overflowing with products—from serums and foundations to lipsticks and hair sprays. People are also far more aware of skincare ingredients and what suits their skin. The beauty and skincare industry today is vast and constantly evolving.
