Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara believes MS Dhoni should bat higher in the order for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season, arguing that the veteran’s influence is reduced when he arrives at the crease too late in the innings.
Dhoni largely batted in the lower order during IPL 2025, often coming in during the final overs to provide a late flourish. According to Pujara, the former India captain could have a much greater impact if he is given more time in the middle.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Pujara said Dhoni still has the ability to change the course of a game if he faces a reasonable number of deliveries. “I don’t see a point in MS Dhoni batting at No. 8 or 9, because he has the potential to turn games around single-handedly, something no other batter in the CSK team can do,” Pujara said.
“If he bats for only five or ten balls, imagine what Mahi bhai can do if he plays 25 or 30 balls,” he added.
Dhoni’s Batting Position a Talking Point
Dhoni’s place in the batting order became a major talking point during IPL 2025, especially after he came in as low as No. 9 in a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The move drew criticism from fans and analysts, who questioned why the experienced finisher was being held back for so long.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming later clarified that Dhoni had been dealing with a recurring knee issue during the season, which influenced how the team managed his workload and batting role. Despite the debate around his position, Dhoni is expected to feature again in IPL 2026. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanath confirmed that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter will be available for the entire tournament.
CSK Aim for Turnaround
Dhoni played all 14 matches for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 but mostly appeared in the lower order. The veteran scored 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17, typically entering during the closing overs to accelerate the scoring.
However, the season proved disappointing for CSK overall. The five-time champions struggled for consistency and ended the campaign at the bottom of the points table, missing out on the playoffs. With IPL 2026 approaching, Pujara believes Dhoni could still play a decisive role for CSK if the team management allows him to bat higher up the order and spend more time at the crease.
