Amid rising tensions with Iran, US President Donald Trump has invoked the Cold War-era doctrine of Ronald Reagan, declaring “PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH” as the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz intensifies.
The phrase, central to Reagan’s strategy during the Cold War, emphasised deterrence through overwhelming military and economic power. Trump’s use of it signals a hardline approach, suggesting Washington is prepared to escalate pressure to force a resolution.
48-Hour Ultimatum
Trump’s remarks come alongside a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a critical artery for global oil shipments. He expressed confidence that the outcome would be “very good,” but paired it with a stark warning of consequences if Tehran fails to comply.
He has indicated that the US could launch strikes on key Iranian infrastructure, including major power facilities, if the waterway remains blocked.
Allies Reluctant
The US President also took aim at NATO allies, criticising them for not supporting efforts to reopen the strait and accusing them of lacking resolve. Responding to the criticism, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called for “understanding,” reflecting caution among allies about being drawn into a wider conflict.
Iran’s Counter-Warning
