Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that left-wing extremism in India is nearing its end, adding that its last major stronghold in Bastar is now on the path of development.
He made the remarks during a discussion in the Lok Sabha, ahead of the government’s March 31 deadline to eliminate Maoist violence. Responding to the debate, Shah said the progress made against Naxalism was the result of coordinated efforts by security forces, state police, and local tribal communities. He also credited public support as a key factor in weakening the insurgency.
The discussion saw sharp exchanges between the BJP and the Congress, with ruling party members blaming the opposition for the spread of Maoist violence during its years in power. Shah said the insurgency had claimed around 20,000 lives and affected millions, linking its growth to a lack of development in tribal regions.
Referring to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Shah noted that Naxalism had once been described as a major internal security challenge, but alleged that adequate action was not taken at the time.
