Cristiano Ronaldo marked a sensational return from injury with a brace as Al Nassr powered to a 5-2 win over Al Najma, strengthening their grip at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings.
The Portuguese forward, making his 100th league appearance for the club, showed no signs of rust after a brief hamstring layoff, taking his remarkable career tally to 967 goals. His return comes after missing Portugal national football team’s recent World Cup warm-up fixtures in the United States.
Despite dominating large spells of the first half, Al Nassr were stunned just before the break when Rakan Al Tulayhi finished off a swift move orchestrated by Felippe Cardoso. However, the league leaders responded immediately, scoring twice before halftime to seize control.
Al Najma fought back early in the second half, with Cardoso once again making an impact by setting up David Tijanic, whose assist led to the equaliser. But the momentum quickly shifted back in Al Nassr’s favour.
Ronaldo restored the lead in the 56th minute from the penalty spot after a handball by Abdullah Al Hawsawi. The veteran forward then sealed the result with a composed finish, latching onto a precise pass from Nawaf Bouchel to complete his brace.
The goals took Ronaldo’s league tally to 23 for the season, placing him just behind Ivan Toney (25) and Julian Quinones (24) in the scoring charts.
The win gives Al Nassr a crucial edge in the title race, opening up a gap over rivals Al Hilal, who remain in contention with a game in hand.
