At least five people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire in Kyiv on Saturday, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky said.
According to Associated Press, the attacker opened fire on the streets of the Ukrainian capital before taking hostages and barricading himself inside a nearby supermarket.
Police later shot the suspect dead. His identity has not yet been disclosed.
Confirming the incident, Zelensky said that at least five people were killed while 10 others were hospitalized. In a social media post, he added that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko had reported the attacker had been “eliminated,” and that authorities were working to establish all the circumstances.
Zelensky also said four hostages were rescued safely, and an investigation is now underway. He instructed officials to ensure that verified information about the case is made public.
