Kedarnath Yatra 2026 kicks off: What pilgrims need to know about new rules

7

The air in the Himalayas turned electric on Wednesday as the doors of Kedarnath Temple—one of the revered Jyotirlingas—opened to devotees at 8 am, marking the start of the Kedarnath Yatra 2026.

Set against snow-clad peaks, the shrine was adorned with nearly 51 quintals of fresh flowers, creating a striking contrast with its ancient stone architecture. Pushkar Singh Dhami joined thousands of pilgrims to witness the ceremonial opening of the six-month pilgrimage season.

This year’s opening comes earlier than usual—nearly 10 days ahead of 2025, when the temple opened on May 2—offering devotees a longer window for darshan. While Kedarnath welcomed pilgrims today, Badrinath Temple is set to open on April 23, following the earlier openings of Gangotri Temple and Yamunotri Temple on April 19.

Kedarnath Yatra 2026: New Rules

Authorities have introduced stricter measures this year to maintain the sanctity of the shrine:

Mobile ban: Phones are not allowed inside the temple complex.
No photos or reels: Capturing images, videos, or social media content is strictly prohibited.
Penalties: Violators may face action, as officials aim to preserve the spiritual atmosphere.
Registration Process

Registration remains mandatory for all pilgrims undertaking the yatra:

Online registration: Visitors must register via the official Uttarakhand government portal.
Verification: Vehicle details and identity checks are required at designated points.
Darshan tokens: Pilgrims must carry documents to secure entry slots for a smooth दर्शन experience.
How to Reach Kedarnath
Trek from Gaurikund

Gaurikund serves as the starting point for the 16-km trek to the temple. The route offers breathtaking views but is physically demanding, with steep climbs. Starting early and taking regular breaks is recommended.

Pony and Palanquin Services

For those unable to trek:

Ponies: A 7–8 hour ride, less physically taxing.
Palanquins (Palkis): A 5–6 hour journey, more comfortable but costlier.
Helicopter Services

The quickest option is by helicopter from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi, with a flight time of just 10–15 minutes. Due to high demand, advance booking is strongly advised, especially during peak pilgrimage season.

With improved arrangements and an early start, Kedarnath Yatra 2026 is set to witness a massive influx of devotees seeking blessings in the Himalayas.
