That Chilled Drink May Not Be Safe: What You Need to Know About Ice Contamination Risks

4

During the summer season, demand for iced drinks and chilled beverages rises sharply as people look for relief from the heat. While these drinks are refreshing, they can sometimes pose hidden health risks.

If the water used to prepare them is not properly purified, it may contain harmful bacteria and viruses that can cause infections. A major concern is ice cubes made from contaminated or unsterilised water, where microorganisms can survive and potentially become active when consumed.

Dr R. Ganesan, Senior Consultant – Internal Medicine, Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani, Chennai, points out that hygiene in storage and handling is equally critical. Ice that is stored in unclean conditions or handled without proper care can easily become a source of contamination, especially when directly added to beverages.

To ensure safety, experts recommend:

  • Using purified or safe drinking water for ice and beverages
  • Storing ice in clean, covered containers
  • Keeping drink containers tightly sealed after use
  • Practising proper hand hygiene while handling ice

Adopting these simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of infections and make iced beverages safer during the summer months.
