‘Ceasefire Intact, But Fragile’: Pete Hegseth Calls ‘Project Freedom’ Temporary Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The ceasefire with Iran remains in place despite fresh tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asserting that the situation has not escalated into a full breakdown.

Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth said the United States is not seeking confrontation in the Gulf, but made it clear that any attack on American forces or commercial shipping would trigger a forceful response. He described the US-led maritime initiative, “Project Freedom,” as a limited and temporary mission focused on safeguarding shipping lanes rather than escalating military engagement.

According to Hegseth, the operation is strictly defensive and will not involve US forces entering Iranian territorial waters or airspace. He also clarified that the mission is entirely separate from “Operation Epic Fury,” underscoring its narrow scope.

Launched by Donald Trump just a day earlier, Project Freedom aims to guide neutral commercial vessels safely through the Gulf amid heightened tensions. However, officials have yet to outline detailed operational specifics.

Hegseth added that diplomatic efforts with Iran are continuing in parallel, with the mission intended to create space for negotiations while ensuring the security of vital maritime routes.
