Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday extended her congratulations to Suvendu Adhikari after he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal following the BJP’s landmark victory in the state Assembly elections.

The congratulatory message was shared by the Bangladesh Awami League on X shortly after Adhikari took oath at a ceremony in Kolkata. In her message, Hasina wished Adhikari and members of his cabinet good health and success in their new responsibilities. She also expressed hope that West Bengal would see accelerated development under his leadership and that the historic relationship and cooperation between India and Bangladesh would continue to deepen.

“She also wished continued prosperity and well-being for all elected representatives and the people of West Bengal,” the statement shared by the Awami League said. Adhikari led the Bharatiya Janata Party to its first-ever government in West Bengal, ending the All India Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state. He also defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Bhabanipur contest.

Along with Adhikari, senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania and Nishit Pramanik took oath as ministers at Brigade Parade Ground. The ceremony coincided with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
