Bhumi Pednekar is reportedly stepping away from season two of The Royals as the makers plan to steer the story in a new creative direction.

According to reports, the upcoming season will shift focus from the central romance between Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter’s characters to the broader world of the royal household and its internal dynamics.

A report by Mid-day suggests the makers are expanding the series’ larger universe instead of continuing the unresolved love story that anchored much of the first season.

A source close to the production dismissed speculation of any fallout between Pednekar and the team, insisting the decision is entirely driven by the evolving narrative.

“When you do a romance, it is the story that leads. What resonated most with audiences was the family, Ishaan, Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman and the larger world of The Royals,” the source said.

The source added that the first season was intentionally left with an unresolved romance and there had never been a concrete decision to carry that storyline forward.

“There was no fight with Bhumi. The makers are simply allowing the story to move organically into the second season,” the source said.

Focus shifts to palace politics

If reports are accurate, season two will delve deeper into the royal family’s relationships, tensions and palace politics, with the romantic angle taking a back seat.

The show, created by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana and written by Neha Veena Sharma, follows a financially struggling royal family attempting to revive its legacy by converting its ancestral palace into a luxury resort.

The ensemble cast also features Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Dino Morea and Milind Soman.

Bhumi’s next projects

Pednekar is reportedly moving toward darker, more layered roles.

She is said to be in talks for a courtroom drama from the makers of Haq, which is expected to star Yami Gautam.

The actor is also rumoured to be part of Imran Khan’s much-discussed comeback project for Netflix, alongside expected work on Daldal 2.

Reflecting on ‘The Royals’ criticism

Pednekar had earlier spoken candidly about the criticism she faced following The Royals’ release in May 2025.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, she admitted the trolling affected her deeply and prompted her to take a nine-month break from acting.

She also acknowledged that while some of the backlash was harsh, parts of it pushed her to reassess her professional choices.
