Sensex down 400 pts from day’s high, Nifty below 23,800; oil & gas stocks weigh

The Nifty50 and the Sensex were trading higher amid mixed global cues as IT and auto stocks supported.

As of 11:10 AM, the Nifty50 was trading 43.90 points or 0.19 per cent higher at 23,749.10, and the Sensex was up 126.65 points or 0.17 per cent at 75,570.85.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle, Adani Enterprises, and Coal India were the top gainers in the Nifty50 index.

In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap and the SmallCap indices were trading 0.20 per cent and 0.21 per cent lower, respectively.

Sector-wise, the Nifty IT rose the most. The Nifty Auto and the Nifty FMCG also outperformed. Meanwhile, the Nifty Metal declined the most.

The Government of India hiked petrol and diesel costs by ₹3 in four metro cities, marking the first price raise in four years. The Nifty Oil and Gas index fell 1 per cent as Hindustan Petroleum and Mahanagar Gas weighed.

On the external front, traders also kept an eye on the outcomes of the second day of the high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi said that Taiwan independence could be a bone of contention between the two countries if mishandled by Washington.
