Kylie Minogue has revealed that she secretly battled breast cancer for a second time in 2021, choosing to keep the diagnosis private while continuing with her career and public appearances.

The singer opened up about the experience in her newly released Netflix documentary, sharing that the diagnosis came more than 15 years after her first breast cancer battle in 2005. “My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself… not like the first time,” Minogue said in the documentary.

The 57-year-old explained that the cancer was detected during a routine check-up and stressed the importance of regular screenings and early detection. “There will be someone out there who will benefit from a gentle reminder to do their check-ups,” she said. “Early detection was very helpful and I am so grateful to be able to say that I am well today.”

Minogue also spoke candidly about why she chose not to publicly disclose the diagnosis at the time. Despite enjoying a major professional resurgence through her 2023 hit Padam Padam, she said privately she was struggling emotionally.

“I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually, I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person,” she said.

The singer admitted there were several moments when she considered revealing the truth during interviews and public appearances but ultimately decided against it.

“‘Padam Padam’ opened so many doors for me but on the inside I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life,” she said. “I’d sit through interviews and every opportunity I thought, ‘now’s the time’, but I kept it to myself.”

Minogue further revealed that she quietly referenced the experience in her 2023 track Story from her album Tension. The lyrics included the line: “I had a secret that I kept to myself … Turn another page, baby take the stage.”

The pop icon was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 36. Following the diagnosis, she cancelled the remaining dates of her Showgirl tour and withdrew from her scheduled appearance at Glastonbury Festival to undergo treatment in Melbourne. She was declared cancer-free in 2006.

Now reflecting on her second battle, Minogue said she feels grateful to have recovered once again and remains deeply connected to music. “Thankfully, I got through it. Again. And all is well,” she said. “Who knows what’s around the corner, but my passion for music is greater than ever.”
