India’s badminton contingent heads into the 2026 Singapore Open aiming to turn promise into podium finishes.
As the prestigious BWF Super 750 tournament gets underway on Tuesday. Spearheaded by Lakshya Sen and PV Sindhu, the Indian challenge features a blend of established stars and rising talents across singles and doubles events.
With crucial ranking points and momentum at stake ahead of the season’s business end, the tournament presents an important opportunity for India’s shuttlers to regain consistency after a mixed stretch marked by injuries and early exits.
Lakshya, Sindhu headline India’s campaign
Lakshya Sen will lead India’s men’s singles charge after an early exit at the Malaysian Masters. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist, who lifted the Australia Open title last year and finished runner-up at the All England Championships earlier this season, begins his Singapore Open campaign against China’s Lu Guang Zu.
In women’s singles, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu faces Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in the opening round. Sindhu has struggled for rhythm since returning from injury setbacks in 2025 but showed encouraging signs with a quarterfinal appearance at the Thailand Open.
Youngster Ayush Shetty, one of India’s emerging stars after his impressive Asian Championships run and Thomas Cup performances, opens against Canada’s Victor Lai in a challenging first-round fixture.
Veterans Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy will also look to rediscover consistency. Srikanth takes on former world champion Loh Kean Yew, while Prannoy faces Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in a difficult opener.
In women’s singles, rising Indian shuttler Unnati Hooda will face Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki, while Malvika Bansod begins her campaign against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang Ti.
Satwik-Chirag spearhead doubles challenge
India’s strongest medal hopes in doubles rest on fourth-seeded duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who recently finished runners-up at the Thailand Open Super 500. The pair start against Americans Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith.
Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun face Japan’s experienced combination of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in men’s doubles. In women’s doubles, India will be represented by Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi, Rutaparna Panda-Swetaparna Panda, and Ashwini Bhat-Shikha Gautam.
