IPL Qualifier 2: Gujarat and Rajasthan battle for remaining spot in final

Two teams built around dominant top orders and attacking pace bowling will collide in IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 as Rajasthan Royals face Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on Friday with a place in the final on the line.

On paper, the similarities are striking. Both sides have relied heavily on their top-order batters and new-ball specialists throughout the season. But while the foundations may look alike, the mood around the two camps could not be more contrasting heading into the knockout clash.

Rajasthan arrive brimming with confidence after dismantling Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator. The Royals produced one of their most complete performances of the season, powered by teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and a fiery opening spell from Jofra Archer.

Sooryavanshi has become the breakout star of the tournament with his fearless approach at the top of the order. The 15-year-old has attacked bowlers from the outset and transformed Rajasthan into one of the most explosive batting units in the competition.

Gujarat, meanwhile, are trying to recover from a bruising defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1. Their bowling attack leaked heavily and the usually dependable batting core failed to cope with scoreboard pressure in Dharamshala.

Despite that setback, Gujarat remain convinced that their formula still works. Captain Shubman Gill and opener Sai Sudharsan have carried the batting through much of the season with consistency rather than chaos, building partnerships that have repeatedly laid the platform for big totals.

Friday’s contest could ultimately be decided in the powerplay.

Rajasthan will again look to Sooryavanshi to unsettle Gujarat early, but the challenge awaiting him is formidable. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada have been among the tournament’s most effective new-ball bowlers and will target the teenager aggressively from the outset.

At the other end, Archer’s duel against Gill and Sudharsan promises to be equally decisive. The England quick appears to be peaking at the right time and his pace and movement with the new ball could test Gujarat’s top order after their collapse in Qualifier 1.

Spin may also influence the outcome on a used New Chandigarh pitch. Rashid Khan has rediscovered his rhythm late in the season and remains Gujarat’s biggest threat through the middle overs after troubling Rajasthan earlier in the campaign.

The head-to-head record slightly favours Gujarat, but both teams have registered one emphatic win each against the other this season. With momentum on Rajasthan’s side and Gujarat desperate to prove Qualifier 1 was only a blip, the contest sets up as one of the most finely balanced matches of the season.
