A scheduled meeting of Trinamool Congress’s newly elected legislators at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence did not take place after only around 20 of the 80 MLAs attended the gathering, held a day.

After the reported attack on party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The low attendance immediately drew political attention, but the TMC downplayed concerns, saying most legislators were engaged in organising protests and managing local responses following the incident involving Abhishek Banerjee and the alleged assault on party MP Kalyan Banerjee.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the meeting had been planned earlier but many MLAs were occupied on the ground with protest programmes and related administrative issues, including assisting party workers who were allegedly detained during clashes. He added that several legislators had communicated their inability to attend and requested a postponement.

According to Ghosh, the party accepted the request and decided to defer the legislative meeting, even though a number of MLAs had already reached the venue. He said a revised schedule would be issued later.

Party sources indicated that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee still interacted informally with some of the legislators who were present at her residence.

Instead of the meeting, the TMC announced an intensified agitation programme over the next two days. This includes block-level and ward-level rallies across West Bengal on Monday, followed by a day-long sit-in protest at Rani Rashmoni Road in Kolkata on Tuesday, to be led by Mamata Banerjee.

The party said the protests would focus on alleged attacks on its leaders and workers and what it described as post-poll violence and enforcement actions against hawkers in parts of the state.

The developments signal the party’s shift from an internal organisational meeting to a broader street-level mobilisation, with further protest plans expected to be announced during Tuesday’s programme.
