Sudhir Mishra Applauds Manoj Bajpayee’s Governor, Calls It a ‘Gripping Tale’
Manoj Bajpayee’s latest release Governor continues to earn praise from audiences and industry insiders alike. The latest to join the chorus is filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, who lauded the political drama for its nuanced storytelling and hailed Bajpayee’s understated yet powerful performance.
Sharing his thoughts on X, Mishra wrote that Governor succeeds in transforming a complex and high-stakes subject into an engaging cinematic experience without compromising on depth.
“Governor does a great job of taking a complex issue and narrating it with fluency. The crisis is real and the solutions are daring and risky but the film turns it into a gripping tale without oversimplifying it. @BajpayeeManoj is terrific. In fact, it’s the mark of a great performance that it doesn’t call attention to itself. He never obstructs the storytelling but almost co-writes it.”
Responding to the praise, Manoj Bajpayee expressed his gratitude, writing, “Bas ab kya chaiye Sudhir sir ke shabdo ke siva! Thank you so much! See you soon for a nice cup of tea and Gup Shup!!”
A Story Rooted in India’s Economic Crisis
Directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar, Governor is set against the backdrop of India’s historic 1991 balance-of-payments crisis. Bajpayee plays A. Ramanan, a character inspired by former RBI Governor S. Venkitaramanan, who was instrumental in navigating the country through one of its most precarious economic periods.
The film chronicles a time when India’s foreign exchange reserves had dwindled to alarming levels, inflation was surging and the economic fallout of the Gulf War further strained the country’s finances. At the centre of the narrative is the government’s bold and controversial decision to pledge more than 60 tonnes of gold to foreign banks in a bid to avert a sovereign default.
Strong Ensemble Cast
Alongside Bajpayee, the film features Madhoo Shah as Vandita Ramanan, while Adah Sharma plays journalist Aditi Verma. The supporting cast includes Noushad Mohamed Kunju as C. Rangarajan, along with Paritosh Sand, Jaywant Wadkar, Krisha Kurup, Rajeev Gaursingh, Sanjay Sonu and Jigar Shah.
Released amid a crowded box-office weekend, Governor has managed to stand out thanks to its blend of political drama, economic history and compelling performances, with Bajpayee’s portrayal emerging as one of the film’s biggest strengths.
